Instead of liberation and freedom, it has brought terror, repression, and violence. Lithuanian villages are forced to feed the occupying army. The "Forest Brothers"—as the partisans call themselves—become the regular army of an underground Lithuanian state. The novel's protagonists, Sakalas, Liutas, Tarzanas, Azhuolas, Sharunas, and a Ukrainian Ivan Martyniuk, who is called Jonas, present readers with a collective portrait of the rebels who challenged the Russian occupying power.
