He is not an ordinary person who had a huge amount of knowledge and who generously shared the results of his work with everyone who was willing, could easily be a couturier and a cook, collected postcards depicting world works of art.
On October 22 the famous Mykolaiv local historian, candidate of historical sciences, associate professor Volodymyr Volodymyrovych Shchukin would have been seventy.
On this day his friends and colleagues gathered in the Central City Library named after M.L. Kropyvnytskyi. They mentioned the human qualities of Volodymyr Volodymyrovych, what a huge mark he left in science.
According to the approximate calculations of Mykolaiv publisher Iryna Hudym, 26 of his books and 250 scientific articles were published.
"He is one of the most popular and recognized specialists in Judaica. But he was the first to write a history of culture. It was published in 1996. He taught at the school of culture. He made a textbook on the history of culture, on the history of Ukraine. These books are still read out to the holes," says Iryna Hudym.
The well-known local historian has written many books that are very iconic for Mykolaiv. In particular, we are talking about the publications "History of the Admiralty Cathedral", "Mykolaiv and Ochakiv Antiquities", "Road to the Temple". In short, a large amount of material that will be studied by many generations.
Together with Andrii Pavliuk, they conducted a fundamental study of the history of the city's Jewish community from the end of the 18th to the beginning of the 20th century. Volodymyr Volodymyrovych also contributed to the compilation of the chronicle and analysis of the tragic events of the Holocaust in the territory of the modern Mykolaiv region.
Natalia Sugatska, the head of the department of humanities at the Mykolaiv Educational and Scientific Institute of Law of the National University "Odesa Law Academy", and Volodymyr Shchukin are connected by their joint student years, scientific activity and work at the university.
"This is an extraordinary person. Very generous. Very talented, creative. He always liked to help people, both with advice and with some kind of support. And financially. He loved it very much," pani Nataia shares warm memories.
Together they raised and taught students, worked for Ukrainian youth. Among all, Natalіa Sugatska singles out two works: "Righteous of the World" and "Dictionary of Terms and Concepts. History of the State and Law of Ukraine".
"He and I taught such a discipline as "History of the state and law of Ukraine". There were textbooks, but there was no dictionary of terms and concepts in the country at that time. And in 2010, we published such a dictionary under the authority of the Ministry. It was the only one in Ukraine at that time that was used by students of higher educational institutions," notes Natalia Sugatska.
Volodymyr Shchukin wanted to translate some of his books into Ukrainian during his lifetime. The historian's dream was realized by the publisher Iryna Hudym. During the meeting, she presented to the guests the publication "Ochakiv Antiquities ", translated into Ukrainian and English, and a book about the history of the First City Hospital.
"For the last two years of his life, at every meeting he asked: "Ira, how is my hospital?". And how can I not translate it. We have it at our work. I will show it. The last reading remains. It is co-authored with Mykola Ivanovich Zamlynskyi," Iryna Hudym emphasized.
