Recently, our library received a book by Valerii Yermilov “Essays of Mykolaiv Antiquity” as a gift from the famous Mykolaiv publisher Iryna Hudym.

Valerii Semenovych Yermilov – Doctor of Historical Sciences, Candidate of Medical Sciences. He made a significant contribution to the study of the history of medicine in Southern Ukraine. For the attention of readers, we have several books by the scientist in the collection of the Central Library named after M.L. Kropyvnytskyi and its branches. Such publications as “The Origin and Formation of the Trade Union Movement of Physicians of Mykolaiv Region”, “Collection of Articles on the History of Medical Insurance and Insurance Medicine and the Use of Their Experience”, “Public Medical Assistance in Southern Ukraine (Second Half of the 19th and Early 20th Centuries): Popularization and Implementation of Scientific Medicine” and others were personally donated to our library by Valerii Semenovych and for which we are sincerely grateful to him.

In "Essays of Mykolaiv Antiquity" the author moved away from the topic of the history of medicine of Southern Ukraine and highlighted new pages of the history of our city. Using archival and literary sources, newspaper material of the southern region of the second half of the 19th - early 20th centuries, he introduces the reader in a sketchy form to little-known pages of the everyday life of Mykolaiv residents, highlights the lives of Mykolaiv women. The scientist focuses on the uniqueness of the history of Mykolaiv as a city of shipbuilders and military sailors, which distinguished it among other Ukrainian cities.

Therefore, the author notes, here we observe examples of women's destinies, worthy and shameful, funny and sad, happy and tragic, but in many ways characteristic of our city. "Essays..." explores the problems of combating venereal diseases, the spread of infectious diseases from animals to humans, and for the first time reveals some secrets of the former criminal world, characteristic of Mykolaiv. The author pays special attention to little-known aspects of the development of the project of the waterway from the Black to the Baltic Seas, which was of great importance for the economic development of our region.

We congratulate pan Valerii on his new book and sincerely thank the author and the publisher for the gift!
