Many streets have names that reflect Nikolaev's Naval history. Some examples: Admiralskaya (the Admiral), Artileriyskaya (Artillery), Bolshaya Morskaya (Large Marine), Malaya Morskaya (Little Marine), Gospitalnaya (Hospital), Ingenernaya (Engineering), Kurierskaya (Courier), and Ekipazheskaya (Crew).

Admiralskaya (the Admiral) Street - took its name from the Admiral House, the home of the General Commander. That structure remains and is now the Museum of Shipbuilding and the Fleet. Many Chief Commanders of the Russian Black Sea Naval Fleet and Military Governors of Nikolaev and Sevastopol lived in this house. The roster of residents includes N.S. Mordvinov, O.S. Grage, M.P. Lazarev, G.I. Butakov, N.A. Arkas, A.P. Manganari, N.V. Kopytov and others. In the early years, Admiralskaya was considered the main street of the city. By order of O.S. Grage, it was the first street to be landscaped, paved and lighted. After the October Revolution, Admiralskaya was renamed Carl Marx Street, but the original name was reapplied after World War II. Today, Admiralskaya is one of the most beautiful streets in the city, with many historic building that date to the city's earliest times.

Artileriyskaya (Artillery) Street - was laid out and named in 1824 when the House of Flagmen and Captains (now known as the House of Fleet Marine Officers) was built at the end of the street. The street connected to a road that led to the Maritime Artillery College on Prokhor's Cellar Cape. After the Crimean War, the artillery arsenal moved to the Maritime Artillery College building. During the second half of the nineteenth century, there were also workshops and an arsenal for artillery for ground forces in Artilleriyskaya Street. Much later, the directorate of the Nikolaev rocket plant was placed there, and outstanding Russian missile men such as General K.I. Konstantinov and V.V. Nechayev worked there.

Bolshaya Morskaya (Large Marine) Street - The street begins at the bank of the Bug Estuary, the Black Sea gulf. The adjective "large" was given because highly-ranked naval officials such as Admirals A.P. Avinov, C.P Khrushchev, V.A. Kornilov, G.I Rogulia and others lived there. To commemorate the October Revolution, the street was renamed 25th October Street, but the original name was returned after the Second World War.

Malaya Morskaya (Little Marine) Streets - is the cross street that connects the Admiralty where vessels were built (today: 67 Communards) to the Black Sea gulf at Kupecheskaya (Merchants') Berth (today, Nikolaev Commercial Sea Port). The adjective "little" was applied not because of the length of the street (it is longer than Bolshaya Morskaya) but because the street began at the gates of the Navigation Officers College where young - "little" - sailors (cadets) learned.

Military streets - (from the 1st to the 12th) are located in what were distant suburbs of the old city. These streets formed the Kherson Slobodka (Outskirts) District. The name was given because marine barracks and houses of the Black Sea Navy company officers were here. Over the years, several of the "military" streets were renamed.

dekabristov Moldavanskaya (Moldavian) Street - (today Dekabristov - Decembrists - Street) got its name from the Moldavian house, where the street began. At the end of the nineteenth century it was renamed Glasenapovskaya Street to commemorate Chief Commander of the Black Sea Navy and ports military governor of Nikolaev B.A. Glasenap. After the October Revolution, the street was named Dekabristov (Decembrists) to honor the Decembrists who lived in Nikolaev.

Kurierskaya (Courier) Street - was named in the second half of the nineteenth century and got its name from the fact that it was the shortest route from the house of the Chief Commander to his summer cottage in the Leski District. Couriers used this road regularly, and their own houses were located there. In 1907, the famous engineer V.G. Shukov, directed construction of a water tower in this street. The tower is still visible today. The other unusual structure in Kurierskaya Street is the former home of a shipbuilding plant manager.
