Streets Nikolaev

041 As with any new city, Nikolaev's streets were not named at first. But as the city grew, it became clear that streets and squares must be given names.

In 1835, a new chief of police, G.G. Avtonomov, submitted a proposal for street names to Admiral M.P. Lazarev, the General Commander and Military Governor at the time. Avtonomov's proposal was accepted and the first street names came into use.

By the middle of the nineteenth century, there were sixty-one named streets in the city, thirty-two east-west and twenty-nine north-south. But only 46 had original names. Some streets from that list still have their historical names. Examples include Naberezhnaya (the Quay) Street, Admiralskaya (the Admiral) Street, Navarinskaya Street, Bolshaya Morskaya (Large Marine) Street and Malaya Morskaya (Little Marine) Street, Sevastopolskaya (Sebastopol) Street, Artileriyskaya (Artillery) Street, Moskovskaya (Moscow) Street, Ingenernaya (Engineering) Street, Sadovaya (Garden) Street, Masterskaya (Workshop) Street, Plotnitskaya (Carpenters') Street, Kupornaya Street, Kotelnaya (Steam) Street, and Ingulskaya (Ingul) Street.

There are multiple sources for the names of Nikolaev streets: marine, geographical, historical and the professions of city inhabitants.
